Email marketing systems are connected to an SMTP service . All you need to know about SMTP is simply that it is what allows you to send emails over the internet.
To simplify, the email marketing app creates and manages emails, and the SMTP service sends those emails over the internet. Together they form an email marketing system.
To be a professional email marketer, you will need your own system working together with the email marketing service you use (Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, Getresponse…etc.) or you can replace the full system with your own.

The first reason you should consider having your own system is because it’s significantly cheaper.
For example, take a look at the standard plan for Mailchimp.
Monthly payments start at $14.99 and are dependent on the amount of contacts on your email list.
I have over 20,000 subscribers, which you can see in the image below increases the price to $159 per month.

Using Mautic, I get around 50-200 new email subscribers per day. Everyday I get new subscribers, but by using my own email marketing system, it only costs me around $30!
There’s a big difference in pricing between using a service like Mail chimp , A Weber or GetResponse and using your own system.
Limited Subscribers vs Unlimited Subscribers
Almost all email marketing companies have a limit on subscribers, with your own email system, you will not worry about a subscriber limit.
To have unlimited subscribers, you need your own email system.
SMTP Switching
I think this is the most important reason. At any time, you can switch email delivery services!
Take a look at my system; under email settings, u can see I am using Sengrid API.
At any time, I can change the sending service to something like Postmark, Mailjet, or G Suite on my Gmail account. This is a perk that none of the top email marketing services offer!

To sum up, with your own email marketing system, pricing is a lot cheaper, you don’t have any limit on subscribers, you can send cold emails, you will not worry about getting banned, and you can switch SMTP services any time you want.

The good thing about this is that you don’t have to worry about waking up one day and discovering that you were banned from your own account for whatever reason.
By owning your own system, all you really need to do is follow best practices and guidelines to keep your system safe.
Sending Cold Emails
If you develop a new business or service and would like to send cold outreach emails, you won’t find any email marketing companies that allow sending that kind of email.
You could use a company like Woodpecker, but you would need to connect your G suite account or Office 365 account, and so on.
However, what’s important to know is by having your own system, you can send cold emails and any other type of email.
So to recap, by using your own email system, you can send newsletters, marketing emails and cold emails.
